La Mezquita de Córdoba

Het was zomaar een klein berichtje in de krant. "A group of Muslims tried to pray inside a Roman Catholic cathedral".

Is het een onschuldig incident of is er meer aan de hand? Wanneer ik op zoek ga stuit ik op het volgende:

Het incident speelt zich af op woensdag 31 maart, de week voor Pasen. In Cordoba (Zuid-Spanje) zijn dan drommen mensen aanwezig voor de processies van boetvaardigen. Met lange witte puntmutsen lopen boetelingen (penitenten) in processie door de straten richting de kathedraal. 
En terwijl zo'n processie in de kerk arriveert werpt een groepje moslims zich neer om gebeden tot hun god te richten. Met walkietalkies is er onderling contact. 
Dit is niet anders dan een provocatie. Stel je eenzelfde situatie eens voor in Mekka of in de Al-Aqsamoskee op de tempelberg...

Het incident vond plaats in de Mezquita de Córdoba. Mezquita betekent moskee. Het bericht kwam in het nieuws onder de titel: A group of Muslims tried to pray inside a Roman Catholic cathedral. Maar tenminste één krant uit de moslimwereld veranderde het bericht als volgt: Muslims try to pray in Cordoba Mosque (Saudi Gazette).

Wat is het nu? Kathedraal of moskee? Op de fundamenten van een christelijke kerk is rond 700 begonnen met de bouw van een moskee. Het was een van de grootste moskeeën ter wereld.

Tijdens de herovering van spaans morenland, de reconquesta, is het gebouw sinds 1236 een kathedraal. Het onderstaande filmpje geeft mooi aan hoe in de loop van de tijd deze veranderingen plaatsvonden.

Is dit incident de eerste keer? Nee. Het is al meermalen voorgekomen. Er is zelfs een actiegroep (Junta Islamica). De woordvoerder Mansur Escudero, een spaanse moslimleider geeft aan wat hun doel is:

Our organisation has made reiterated petitions in a peaceful way and from a strict respect for law so they would permit the shared ecumenical use of the temple. We would have avoided what happened yesterday.

They publicise the building as a mosque because that brings in tourists but they do not allow the Muslims who pay money to go inside to pray.

Uit een brief aan de premier: "What we wanted was not to take over that holy place, but to create in it, together with you and other faiths, an ecumenical space unique in the world which would have been of great significance in bringing peace to humanity. We (Spanish Muslims) would like to share with you (the Catholic community) a prayer.

Een zekere Zakarias Maza, director of the Taqwa mosque in Granada doet ook een duit in het zakje:

We hope the Vatican will give a signal that it has a vision of openness and dialogue. It would be good if there were a gesture of tolerance on their part. Cordoba has been a symbol of the union of three cultures for centuries. Even now, Jews and Muslims live together with Christians in the neighbourhood around the mosque. The church council doesn't seem to be open to dialogue.

Dat klinkt best goed. Maar ik denk dat de aartsbisschop Fitzgerald goed observeert:

A general reflection is needed here. As there are monumental buildings in Cordoba, there are also others around the world which currently have a use different from that of the original - like the Hagia Sophia in Istanbul, now an Islamic museum, despite pressure put on by some Muslims to use it again as a mosque."

"It is difficult to have Christians and Muslims mixing and sharing a common life. The shared use of a building by various churches is problematic. There are spaces dedicated to this purpose, for example, in airports. But they are not churches or mosques. They are interfaith spaces.

"But this is based on a type of agreement to allow for their shared use. Yet this is not the reality in Cordoba, where the building belongs to a specific community. We want to live in peace with persons of other religions. However, we don't want to be pushed, manipulated and go against the very rules of our faith. If it is a Catholic chapel with the Blessed Sacrament inside. It should not be used for prayer services of another religious tradition.

En misschien is deze simpele observatie niet ver bezijden de waarheid:

"It's a reconquest. Through force, through geography, through culture, they are trying to take over".

En wordt dat niet bevestigd door het volgende? De nauwelijks 1000 personen tellende moslimgemeenschap heeft al meerdere malen bouwplannen ingediend voor de bouw van een enorme moskee. En de financiering dan? Ach, daar tekenden moslimlanden als Saudi-Arabie voor.

Cordoba, in het oude 'Al-Andalus', lijkt erg veel op een speerpunt voor de islam.
